Rippled, buckled shingles are sometimes more than a cosmetic issue. They could indicate moisture infiltration or other problems with your roof. To help you determine an effective solution, Genesis Roofing lists some common causes of asphalt shingle rippling.
Re-Roofing Issues
A re-roof is when the new shingles are installed directly over the old ones instead of removing the old shingles first. This can result in trapped moisture within the old shingles, causing damage to the underside of the new shingles. Over time, this moisture is absorbed by the new shingles, leading to rippling or curling.
Inadequate Ventilation
If there is insufficient or blocked venting, moisture can condensate on the underside of the decking boards. Eventually, moisture will seep through and start to affect the shingles. This can cause warped decking as well as rippled or buckled shingles.
Wind Damage
When shingles are pushed by high winds, it can result in a wavy appearance. If there is no creasing or cracking on the shingles, they can be smoothed down and adhesives can be reapplied to hold them in place. However, if the shingles have creased or cracked, you’ll need to have them replaced.
Roof Leaks
Leaks may first penetrate the shingles, where they can pool up on the underlayment for a long period, making their way through the decking and into your home. The trapped moisture layer will begin to warp the shingles surrounding the leak, which leads to rippling and buckling. In this case, the leak and shingles must be repaired.
Manufacturing Defects
If your new roof shows signs of rippling and buckling, it’s likely a manufacturing defect. Fortunately, most roofs come with a warranty on both the shingles and the installation, so you only need to call your contractor for repairs.
